The goal is to send opponents flying

Super Smash Bros. changes the usual fighting-game objective. Damage increases a percentage, and a fighter becomes easier to launch as that number rises. Winning therefore depends on where you land a hit as well as how often you attack. Platforms, ledges, and recovery moves all matter, making a scramble near the edge very different from a fight in the middle. The original cast keeps the matchups manageable while still offering distinct movement, range, and ways to return to safety.

A small roster with plenty to discover

Nintendo characters bring familiar abilities into a shared set of rules, from Kirby's copying to Link's ranged tools. Items and stage hazards can add surprises to local matches, while the solo game provides a sequence of opponents and bonus challenges. Break the Targets and Board the Platforms give character movement its own spotlight. It is a useful starting point for someone curious about the series, especially if learning a smaller set of fighters sounds more inviting than a huge modern roster.

Keep the original local format in mind

The Nintendo 64 release supports one to four players and uses compatible Nintendo 64 controllers. Its multiplayer is played together on the same console, while the single-player mode can be enjoyed without additional accessories. This is the first Super Smash Bros., with its own roster and modes; it is separate from Melee, Brawl, and Ultimate. The loose format contains the cartridge only. Review the individual copy's region and cosmetic condition when matching it to your hardware or collecting a particular edition.
