Bartz, Boko and the four crystals
Bartz is traveling with his chocobo Boko when a meteorite falls near Tycoon, and he soon meets Princess Lenna, the old man Galuf and the pirate captain Faris. The Wind, Water, Fire and Earth crystals are shattering, and their shards give the party the power to take on jobs. Exdeath drives the plot, but the swordsman Gilgamesh steals plenty of scenes, and the Clash on the Big Bridge is one of the series' best-known battle themes. The tone is lighter than Final Fantasy IV or VI, with jokes along the way.
Mixing and matching jobs
The job system is the heart of the game. Each character can switch between jobs like Knight, Black Mage, Thief, Blue Mage, Dancer and Mime, earn ability points in battle and carry learned skills into other jobs. A Knight that casts White Magic or a Mime loaded with skills from three other jobs are both possible. The Advance version adds four jobs, Gladiator, Cannoneer, Oracle and Necromancer, plus a 30-floor bonus dungeon, the Cloister of the Dead. A bestiary, music player and quick save round it out.
Buying a used GBA copy of Final Fantasy V
This cartridge plays on the Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP, Game Boy Micro, the original Nintendo DS and DS Lite, and on a GameCube with the Game Boy Player. It will not fit the DSi, the 3DS family or later systems, which have no Game Boy Advance slot. Reproduction copies of Final Fantasy GBA games circulate, so look for a sharp label and the printed code on the back. The case and manual are included only if the title says so.
