A horned boy and a girl named Yorda
Ico is born with horns, and the people of his village take him to a castle on a sea cliff and seal him inside a stone coffin as a sacrifice. When the coffin breaks open, he finds Yorda, a pale girl who speaks a language he cannot understand, held in a cage. Shadow creatures try to drag her into dark portals, and the Queen of the castle wants her kept there. The whole game is about getting both of you out, with almost no dialogue, no on-screen meters and mostly the sound of wind, sea and footsteps for company.
Holding hands through the castle
Ico solves the castle's puzzles by climbing chains, pushing blocks, pulling levers and swinging across gaps, while Yorda cannot follow the same routes. You hold the R1 button to take her hand and lead her, and call her over once you have found a way through. Only Yorda can open the glowing idol doors that seal off each section, so you have to keep her close. When the shadows come, Ico fights them off with a stick or sword. The game saves when the two of you rest together on stone benches around the castle.
Picking a pre-owned Ico disc
Ico came out on PlayStation 2 in 2001 on a single disc. On any pre-owned copy, the data side and the center hub are the areas to check, and light surface marks usually do not stop a disc from loading. Saves go to a PS2 memory card.
