Eight heroes and a lot of monster generators
Dark Legacy builds on Gauntlet Legends and expands the cast to eight classes. The Warrior, Valkyrie, Wizard and Archer return, joined by the Dwarf, Knight, Jester and Sorceress, each in several colors so four players can pick distinct heroes. Levels are packed with monster generators that keep spawning enemies until you smash them. You grab keys for locked doors, food to restore health and potions for magic attacks, while the announcer calls out warnings when a hero is close to death. Characters level up and keep their stats between sessions.
Built for four players on one couch
Gauntlet is at its best with friends. Two players can jump in with the PS2's own controller ports, and a PS2 Multitap brings the count to four, all sharing one screen as the camera keeps everyone together through castles, caves and dungeons. A turbo meter charges powerful special attacks, and power-ups such as three-way shot, reflect shot, speed boots and invisibility change how each fight plays out. Bosses guard the end of each realm. Solo play works too, but sharing food and deciding who takes the keys is half the fun of co-op.
