Color, backward compatibility and two AA batteries

Nintendo released the Game Boy Color in North America in 1998. It keeps the familiar vertical layout of the original but shrinks the body and runs on just two AA batteries. The screen shows color games in full and can tint older gray cartridges with preset palettes chosen by button combinations at startup. There is no backlight, so good lighting matters. A link cable port and an IR port on the top let two systems trade and play together in supported games.

Games worth putting in it

Pokemon Gold, Silver and Crystal brought the Johto region and a day and night clock to the Color. The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages link together through a password system. Link's Awakening DX added a color dungeon, and Super Mario Bros. Deluxe packed the NES original with extra modes. Dragon Warrior Monsters and Shantae also appeared here. Original Game Boy cartridges such as Tetris and Super Mario Land 2 run too, often with a color palette applied.
