Sega's final console
The Dreamcast launched in North America on September 9, 1999, and Sega ended production in 2001. In that short window it gathered a strong run of games. Soulcalibur, Power Stone, Crazy Taxi and Marvel vs. Capcom 2 brought arcade play home, while Sonic Adventure, Jet Set Radio and Shenmue showed what Sega's own studios could do. Every console shipped with a built-in modem, which is how Phantasy Star Online put console players into shared online adventures before that was common on home systems.
Four ports and a memory card with a screen
Four controller ports on the front make the Dreamcast a natural fit for party games and fighters. Each controller has two expansion slots, one for a Visual Memory Unit, or VMU, and one for a Jump Pack or microphone. The VMU is a memory card with its own small screen and buttons, so games like Sonic Adventure let you raise Chao on it away from the console. The system reads Dreamcast game discs, which use Sega's own high-density format, and also plays standard audio CDs. Saving progress in most games requires a VMU or another Dreamcast memory card.
Before you plug in a used Dreamcast
The disc drive does the hardest work, so listen for the disc spinning up and watch for the Sega swirl when a game boots. Many units ask for the date and time at start-up, a common trait on consoles whose small internal clock battery has run down, and it does not stop games from playing. The Dreamcast uses a standard two-prong figure-8 power cord. Controllers, VMUs, the power cord and the AV cable vary by unit and are included only if the title lists them.

This is a North American Dreamcast, made for US game discs. Dreamcast games are region coded, so many Japanese and European releases will not start on a US console. Sega Saturn and PlayStation discs will not run either.
