Sega's 32-bit disc console

Sega launched the Saturn in North America in May 1995, months ahead of its announced date. It uses a CD drive for games, two controller ports on the front and a cartridge slot on top for add-ons like a backup memory cartridge. Two US models exist. The first has oval buttons on top, and the second has round ones. Both play the same North American games and audio CDs, and both connect to a TV through Sega's AV connector on the back.

The system is strongest with arcade and 2D games. Virtua Fighter 2 and Sega Rally Championship came straight from Sega's arcade side. Nights into Dreams has you flying through the dream world of Nightopia, while Panzer Dragoon Saga pairs a dragon rider with a role-playing story across four discs. Guardian Heroes lets you brawl across three lanes, and Saturn Bomberman supports large multiplayer matches with a multitap. Burning Rangers and Dragon Force add more variety.

Saturn units vary in wear, and the photo is representative. When it arrives, listen for the disc drive spinning up and check that the disc lid closes firmly. The Saturn keeps saves and the clock in internal memory that relies on a small backup battery, and its state is not something a pre-owned listing can promise. Accessories vary by unit. A US Saturn is built for North American discs. Japanese and European discs are region locked and will not start on a standard US console. Audio CDs play from the built-in CD player menu.

Saturn controllers plug into the two ports on the front. The standard Saturn pad and the 3D Control Pad with its analog stick both work. Genesis and Dreamcast controllers use different connectors and do not plug in.
