A PSP that slides open

Released in 2009, the PSP Go hides its controls under a 3.8-inch screen that slides up to reveal the D-pad, face buttons and analog nub. It is noticeably smaller and lighter than the PSP-3000. Games live on 16GB of internal storage or on a Memory Stick Micro (M2) card, since there is no disc drive at all. The Go added Bluetooth, so it can pair with a DualShock 3 through a PS3, and it can pause a game mid-play from the PS button and pick it up later.

Digital only, and what that means now

Because the Go has no UMD slot, disc-based PSP games will not play on it. Everything has to be downloaded to the system. Sony closed the PlayStation Store on the PSP itself in 2021, so new purchases now go through a PS3 or PS Vita on the same account and then download to the Go from its download list. Games already bought on an account can be downloaded the same way. Many PSP titles, like Patapon and LocoRoco, were sold digitally along with PS one Classics.

Things to look at on a used PSP Go

Slide the screen up and down several times. The slider should move smoothly and lock at both ends. The battery is built in and not meant to be swapped, so its charge life varies from one Go to the next. The Go charges and transfers data through its own multi-use connector rather than the round charging port on other PSPs, so check that the port on the bottom is straight and firm. Chargers, cables and memory cards are included only if listed.
