Pokémon Brilliant Diamond follows the route from Twinleaf Town through Sinnoh's eight Gyms and onward to the Pokémon League. Mount Coronet divides the region, while myths surrounding Dialga and the lakes shape the larger story. The remake keeps the locations and progression of Pokémon Diamond while updating the presentation for Nintendo Switch. Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup form the opening partner choice.

The Grand Underground expands exploration below Sinnoh

Underground tunnels support digging for fossils and treasures, building a Secret Base, and visiting Pokémon Hideaways. Statues placed in the base influence which Pokémon appear in those hideaways, giving underground activity a direct role in team building. Super Contest Shows provide a separate performance path built around visual, dance, and move evaluation. These systems give collectors and battlers useful goals between Gyms.
