A Hyrule defined by freedom of approach

Breath of the Wild opens almost all of Hyrule after its introductory plateau and lets the player decide what to pursue next. Mountains can be climbed, valleys crossed by paraglider, and distant landmarks used as navigation points. Weather, temperature, stamina, and terrain affect the journey, so reaching a destination can become its own problem to solve. The world rewards detours with shrines, materials, equipment, memories, and small environmental stories.

Physics, runes, and preparation shape every solution

The Sheikah Slate provides tools for manipulating metal, creating ice pillars, stopping objects in time, and using remote bombs. Those abilities interact with the game's physics, allowing many shrines and outdoor puzzles to support more than one answer. Cooking turns gathered ingredients into meals and elixirs for health or temporary effects, while weapons wear down through use. Combat therefore depends on observation, improvisation, and the resources currently at hand.

An open-world Zelda built for Nintendo Switch

Link's central goal is clear, but the route to Divine Beasts, memories, villages, and Hyrule Castle remains flexible. Players can focus on the main quest, spend hours mapping remote areas, or develop Link through shrines before facing stronger enemies. The game is single-player and supports TV, tabletop, and handheld modes. This is the physical US Nintendo Switch edition of the base game; downloadable expansion content is separate.
