Four heroes and the crystals of Luxendarc
The story opens when a Great Chasm swallows Tiz Arrior's home village of Norende. Tiz joins Agnes Oblige, the Vestal of Wind, who sets out to reawaken the world's four crystals. They are joined by Ringabel, a flirtatious man with amnesia and a mysterious journal, and Edea Lee, who defects from the Eternian Forces. Their journey across Luxendarc takes them through places like Caldisla, Ancheim and Florem and into conflict with the Duchy of Eternia and its Anti-Crystalist officers, each of whom carries an asterisk.
Brave, Default and the job system
Battles are turn-based with a twist. Default guards and saves up Brave Points, while Brave spends them, or borrows up to three turns in advance, to act several times at once. Go too far into debt and a character sits out until the points recover. Asterisks taken from bosses unlock jobs such as Knight, White Mage, Black Mage, Thief, Spell Fencer and Valkyrie, and abilities learned in one job can be carried into another. Settings let you change the encounter rate and battle speed at any time, so grinding is as long or as short as you want.

Bravely Default ships on a standard Nintendo 3DS game card, which has a small tab on one side that keeps it out of older DS slots. On a pre-owned copy, look at the contacts on the back and the label, where light handling wear is common and does not affect play. Save data is stored on the card, and you can begin a new game from the title screen.
