The one where Mario is the villain
After the events of Donkey Kong, Mario has locked the big ape in a cage, and Junior sets out to free him. Mario plays the bad guy here, cracking a whip and sending Snapjaws down the vines after Junior. Nintendo released the arcade game in 1982 and brought it to the NES in North America in 1986. The NES version keeps all four arcade stages: the jungle vines, a springboard stage, an electrified stage full of Sparks, and the final stage where Junior pushes keys up chains to open his father's cage.
Climbing, dropping fruit and dodging Snapjaws
Junior climbs faster holding two vines and slides down quicker holding just one, a small detail that shapes every route. Snapjaws crawl along the vines, Nitpicker birds swoop down and drop eggs, and Sparks race along the wires in the electric stage. Junior can knock fruit loose to fall on enemies below, taking out everything it hits on the way down for bonus points. Game A and Game B set the difficulty, and two players can take turns chasing a high score.
