Ramps, mud and an overheating engine

Excitebike launched with the NES in North America in 1985. You race a motocross bike across a side-view track with four lanes. The A button accelerates normally, while the B button gives extra speed but heats the engine, and if the temperature bar maxes out, the bike stalls while it cools off. Ramps demand the right landing angle, which you set with the D-pad in the air, and mud patches slow you down. Clip another rider's back wheel and you tumble off.

Selection A, Selection B and Design mode

Selection A is a solo race against the clock, while Selection B adds computer-controlled riders who get in your way. Each has five tracks, and a qualifying time decides whether you move on. Design mode lets you build your own course by placing ramps, mud and cooling markers, then race it. The US cartridge cannot save those designs, so a custom track lasts only until you turn off the power.

How does Excitebike play on NES?

It is a side-scrolling motocross racer. You accelerate with A or B, switch lanes with the D-pad, manage the engine temperature and angle your bike in the air for clean landings. Races are short, so it is easy to pick up for a few minutes.

Can I save tracks I build in Design mode?

Not on the US cartridge. The Japanese Famicom version could save to an add-on tape recorder, but the NES release has no save feature, so your track is lost when you turn the system off. You can still build and race as many as you like in one session.

Which consoles play this cartridge?

It plays on the original front-loading NES, the top-loading NES-101 and other consoles that accept 72-pin NES cartridges. It does not work on the NES Classic Edition, which has built-in games only, though Excitebike happens to be one of them.
