Atari Games released Paperboy in arcades in 1985, and Mindscape brought it to the NES in 1988. You ride a bicycle down a suburban street shown at an angle, tossing papers onto the doorsteps and into the mailboxes of subscribers. The week runs from Monday through Sunday, and a missed delivery can cost you that customer the next day. Houses that do not subscribe are fair game, and breaking their windows earns points. Run low on papers and you can grab a fresh bundle along the route.
Obstacles and the bonus course
The street gets busier as the week goes on. Cars pull out, dogs give chase and sidewalk hazards pile up, so a single crash can cost a life. Learning where each obstacle appears is most of the skill, along with timing throws so papers land on doorsteps instead of lawns. At the end of every day comes a bonus course, where you jump ramps and toss papers at targets for extra points. Speed control matters too, since you can pedal faster or brake to line up a throw.
