A darker Doom built for the N64
Midway released Doom 64 in 1997 under id Software's supervision, and it plays like classic Doom at a slower, moodier pace. The monsters were redrawn with new sprites, from Imps and Pinkies to Hell Knights and Mancubi, and a new enemy, the Nightmare Imp, is harder to spot as it moves in and out of view. Colored lighting throws deep shadows over the bases and hellish temples, and Aubrey Hodges' soundtrack swaps metal riffs for droning ambient sound. The campaign opens at the Staging Area and runs through a set of maps made just for this release.
The Unmaker and the demon keys
The standard arsenal is back, including the shotgun, super shotgun, chaingun, plasma rifle and BFG 9000, and the chainsaw now has twin blades. Doom 64 adds the Unmaker, a demonic laser weapon that fires a stream of beams. Three demon keys hidden in secret areas upgrade it, making it fire faster and spread its beams wider. Four difficulty settings cover everyone from first-timers to veterans, and progress can be picked up later with a password, so you can resume a campaign on any N64.
