Four extra megabytes that matter
Every Nintendo 64 shipped with 4 MB of memory and a small Jumper Pak in the memory slot on top. The Expansion Pak replaces the Jumper Pak and brings the total to 8 MB. A few major games will not start without it. Donkey Kong 64 needs it, as does The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, and Perfect Dark locks its single-player campaign and most multiplayer modes without it. Other games use the extra memory for sharper high-resolution modes, including Turok 2: Seeds of Evil and Star Wars: Rogue Squadron.
Installing it takes a minute
With the console switched off, slide off the memory cover near the front of the console's top and pull the Jumper Pak straight up. Press the Expansion Pak firmly into the same slot until it seats, then put the cover back. Games that do not use the extra memory still play normally with it installed, so most owners leave it in for good. Keep the Jumper Pak somewhere safe in case you ever need it, because the console will not run with the slot empty.

This listing is for an official Nintendo Expansion Pak, not a third-party memory upgrade. Look for the Nintendo markings on the pak and a snug fit in the slot. It can feel warm after a long session, which is normal for this part. Consoles, Jumper Paks, games and controllers are not part of this listing unless the title says so. If a game that needs the pak reports that it is missing, power off, reseat it and try again.

Do I need one for Donkey Kong 64 or Majora's Mask?
Yes. Both games refuse to start without an Expansion Pak and show a message asking for one. Perfect Dark starts, but only a small part of its multiplayer is available until you install it. Most other games run without it.
