A pod lost to the storm

Sega released Ecco the Dolphin on the Genesis in 1992. It opens in Home Bay, where a strange storm sweeps Ecco's pod out of the water. Ecco sets off to find them, meets other sea creatures, and learns that an alien race called the Vortex is behind the disappearance. The journey leads through places like Medusa Bay, the Undercaves and the Ice Zone, then to the Asterite, the oldest creature in the sea, and finally to Atlantis and a time machine.

Sonar, air and crystal glyphs

Ecco has to surface for air, and running out is a constant danger in the deep caves. A press of the sonar button lets Ecco sing, which talks to other animals and activates crystal Glyphs that give hints or open paths. Holding it sends out an echo that draws a map of the area. Ecco can also charge to ram sharks and jellyfish, and pushing boulders, clearing barriers and timing dashes shape most of the puzzles.
