Why the Controller S replaced the Duke
The first Xbox controller, nicknamed the Duke, was large enough that plenty of hands struggled with it. Microsoft released the smaller Controller S in North America in 2002, and by the end of 2003 it had replaced the Duke worldwide. It keeps the same inputs: two clickable analog sticks, a D-pad, A, B, X and Y buttons, black and white buttons, two analog triggers, and Start and Back. The face buttons are pressure sensitive, so games can read how hard you press.
Memory slots and the breakaway cable
Two slots on top of the controller take Xbox Memory Units or the Xbox Live Communicator headset. The cable has a breakaway plug partway along its length, which pulls apart if someone trips over the cord, so the console does not get dragged off the shelf. The Controller S plugs into any of the four ports on the front of the original Xbox. It does not work on an Xbox 360 or later consoles, which use different controllers and connections.

Let both sticks rest and watch for drift in a game, then click each one in. Press the triggers slowly and fully, since the springs can weaken. Check that the breakaway connector is present, snaps together firmly and that the cable has no cuts or bare wire. The rumble motors should kick in during gameplay. No. The Controller S uses the original Xbox controller port and works only with the original Xbox. Xbox 360 and later consoles have different controller connections, even when they run backward compatible original Xbox games.
