Nintendo launched the NES in North America in 1985, and its library still covers almost every genre people play today. Super Mario Bros. set the template for side-scrolling platformers, The Legend of Zelda sent players into an open overworld with a battery save, and Metroid, Castlevania, Contra and Mega Man followed within a few years. Because every game runs from its own cartridge, there is no install, no update and no account to manage. You seat a Game Pak, press Power and the title screen appears in seconds, which is a big part of why players keep coming back to the original hardware.
Hooking an NES up to a modern TV
The NES outputs a standard definition signal. The front-loading NES-001 has an RF output plus composite video and mono audio jacks, so most people connect it with a basic AV cable to a TV's composite inputs. The later top-loading model outputs RF only. Newer TVs without composite inputs usually need an inexpensive converter box. One thing that does not carry over to flat screens is the NES Zapper. Light gun games such as Duck Hunt and Hogan's Alley rely on the timing of a CRT television, so shots will not register on LCD, LED or plasma sets.
What to look at on a used NES
The part that matters most on any NES is the 72-pin connector inside the cartridge slot. When its pins wear or loosen, games may fail to boot and the power light blinks. Pre-owned consoles also differ in their AC adapter, RF switch or AV cable, and controllers vary by unit. Which NES games will play on this console?
It plays North American NES Game Paks, the 72-pin gray cartridges sold in the US and Canada. Japanese Famicom cartridges are a different size and do not fit, and games made for other regions generally will not start on a US console because of its lockout chip.
Does this come with a controller and cables?
This listing is for the NES console itself. Controllers, the AC adapter and the RF or AV cable vary by unit and are included only if the listing title says so. A box and manuals are not part of a pre-owned console listing. Message us before ordering if you need a full setup.
Will a Zapper light gun work with this NES on my TV?
The Zapper plugs into the NES controller port, but it only works on a CRT television. Duck Hunt, Hogan's Alley and other light gun games read the timing of a tube TV's picture, so hits do not register on LCD, LED or plasma screens.
What does a blinking power light mean?
On NES consoles, a blinking red power light usually points to a poor connection between the cartridge and the 72-pin connector, or dirty contacts on the Game Pak. Reseating the cartridge often helps. If the problem keeps happening, contact us within our 30-day return window.
