Where your PS2 progress lives

The PlayStation 2 has no built-in storage for game saves, so nearly every game needs a memory card. Sony's own card holds 8 MB, which is enough for many save files, although some large games take up a big share of it. The card uses Sony's MagicGate chip, which the console reads through the memory card slot on the front. You can view, copy and delete saves from the PS2 browser menu without starting a game.

PS1 games and the second slot

PS2 games save to this card, but original PlayStation games played on a PS2 still look for a PS1 memory card, so keep one of those if you play older discs. Because the PS2 has two memory card slots, you can use this card alongside another one and copy PS2 saves between them in the browser. If you move to a PS3, Sony's PS3 Memory Card Adaptor can copy saves from this card to that console.
