Every painting opens a new playground
Peach's Castle gives Super Mario 64 a welcoming center, but the paintings inside lead to very different challenges. One course asks you to climb a mountain, another to explore underwater, and another to judge your footing on slippery snow. Collecting Power Stars opens more of the castle, so exploration has a clear purpose without following a single straight path. Returning to a course with a new objective often changes the route you take through a place you already recognize.
Movement is the main attraction
Mario's long jump, backflip, wall kick, and triple jump make even an empty stretch of ground worth playing with. The analog stick lets you adjust speed and direction, while the camera needs attention as the terrain becomes more demanding. Special caps add flight, metal weight, or temporary intangibility in selected areas. Players who enjoy improving a route can keep finding cleaner jumps long after they know where a Star is, giving familiar courses a different kind of replay value.
