Nintendo's 16-bit home console
Nintendo released the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in North America in 1991, and it went on to host some of the best-regarded games of the 1990s. Its controller added X and Y face buttons plus L and R shoulder buttons, which fighters like Street Fighter II Turbo and racers like Super Mario Kart put to good use. Mode 7 scaling and rotation gave F-Zero and Pilotwings their sense of speed and depth, and some cartridges carried extra chips, like the Super FX in Star Fox, to push the hardware further.
Two models, one cartridge format
Nintendo made the original boxy console from 1991 and a smaller redesign, often called the SNES Jr., in 1997. Both play the same North American Super Nintendo cartridges and use the same two controller ports. The multi-out AV port on the back takes the same AV cable used by the Nintendo 64 and GameCube, which makes hookup easy if you already own one of those. The original model also has an RF output for older TVs. Every model needs a Super Nintendo AC adapter and a video cable to run.

Many original Super Nintendo consoles have yellowed over the years, mostly on the top shell, because of the plastic Nintendo used at the time. That color shift is cosmetic and has no effect on how games play. Look for a slot that holds cartridges firmly and power and reset switches that move freely. This is a North American console built for US Super Nintendo cartridges. Super Famicom and European cartridges use a different shell shape and do not fit the US slot without an adapter. For the smoothest experience, stick with North American cartridges.
