The layout that stuck
Nintendo shipped this controller with the Super Nintendo in 1991. It added X and Y buttons to the A and B pair from the NES and put L and R shoulder buttons on top, a layout that controllers from nearly every company later followed. On the US version, X and Y are concave and A and B are convex, so you can tell them apart by feel. The rounded shape sits comfortably through long sessions of Super Metroid or Chrono Trigger, and the plus-shaped D-pad is precise enough for Street Fighter II Turbo.
Games that use every button
Plenty of Super Nintendo games need all six buttons plus Start and Select. Street Fighter II Turbo spreads three punches and three kicks across the face and shoulder buttons, Super Mario Kart uses the shoulder buttons to hop around corners, and Super Metroid lets you aim diagonally with L and R. Two-player games like Contra III, NBA Jam and Secret of Mana need a second controller, and this one plugs into either port. The cable is attached, so there are no batteries or pairing involved.

Press each button and roll the D-pad through every direction to make sure it responds without sticking. Look along the cord for kinks or splits near the plug and where it enters the controller.
