Operation Snake Eater, 1964
Naked Snake is dropped into the Soviet wilderness to rescue a weapons scientist named Sokolov. The mission falls apart when his mentor, The Boss, defects to the Soviet side and hands two nuclear warheads to Colonel Volgin, who wants Sokolov's giant tank, the Shagohod. Snake is left to finish the job alone, guided by Major Zero and Para-Medic over the radio, and crosses paths with a young Ocelot, the spy EVA and the Cobra Unit, made up of The Pain, The Fear, The End, The Fury and The Sorrow.
Camouflage, hunting and the CURE system
Snake Eater traded the radar of earlier games for survival. A camouflage index shows how well your uniform and face paint blend into the ground, bark or grass around you, so crawling through the right terrain in the right pattern matters as much as staying out of sight. Stamina drops over time, and you restore it by eating snakes, frogs and rations. Burns, gunshot wounds and broken bones need treatment in the CURE menu. Bosses can be handled in unusual ways too. The End, an aging sniper, can be taken out early at the right moment, or left to die of old age.
