A hard drive in every console
Microsoft built a hard drive into every original Xbox. Games save straight to it, and many used it to cache data for shorter load times. The dashboard can also copy audio CDs to the drive, and games such as Project Gotham Racing let you race to your own ripped soundtrack. Memory units exist for carrying saves to a friend's house, but you do not need one to play. Four controller ports on the front make split-screen nights easy without extra adapters.
Halo, Ninja Gaiden and system link
Halo: Combat Evolved made the Xbox, and its system link mode still works today. Connect consoles with a system link cable or a network switch and up to 16 players can fight on Blood Gulch across four Xboxes. Beyond Halo, the library runs from Ninja Gaiden Black and Jet Set Radio Future to Splinter Cell and Panzer Dragoon Orta. The original Xbox Live service shut down in 2010, so online play is gone, but local multiplayer and system link never relied on it.
Buying a used original Xbox
The DVD drive is the part to watch. Microsoft used drives from different makers over the console's life, and a tired drive may hesitate on scratched discs. The tray should open smoothly and the console should boot to the dashboard. The Xbox uses its own AV cable and a standard power cord, and it needs an Xbox controller to operate. DVD movie playback requires the separate DVD Playback Kit. Controllers, cables and accessories vary by unit and come only if the listing says so.

Does the original Xbox play Xbox 360 games?
No. The original Xbox only plays original Xbox games. It works the other way around for some titles, since the Xbox 360 and later Xbox consoles can run a selected list of original Xbox games, but this console cannot read Xbox 360 discs.
What is included with the console?
The listing is for the Xbox console itself. Controllers, the AV cable, power cord, DVD Playback Kit and memory units vary by unit and are included only if the listing title names them. You need an Xbox controller and an AV cable to use it.
Will it play games from other regions?
Stick with games from the same region as the console. A North American Xbox is meant for North American (NTSC) discs, and games from Europe or Japan may not run on it. Check the region printed on the case before buying.
Can I still play on Xbox Live?
Not through Microsoft. The original Xbox Live service ended in April 2010. Split-screen games and system link play over a local network still work, so Halo: Combat Evolved and other system link games can connect several consoles in one room.
