What the New model adds
Nintendo released the smaller New Nintendo 3DS in North America in 2015, the same year as the larger New 3DS XL. Both have a faster processor than the original 3DS, a small C-Stick above the face buttons and extra ZL and ZR shoulder buttons. A camera tracks your face to keep the 3D effect steady as you move, and an NFC reader under the lower screen reads amiibo figures without an adapter. The standard model is also the only 3DS with swappable cover plates on the front and back.
A library of 3DS and DS games
The New 3DS plays Nintendo 3DS game cards and nearly all Nintendo DS game cards, so it covers Ocarina of Time 3D, A Link Between Worlds, Fire Emblem Awakening, Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Pokemon X and Y, along with DS favorites like Pokemon HeartGold. A few games need New 3DS hardware, including Xenoblade Chronicles 3D and Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition, and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS uses the C-Stick for smash attacks. The Nintendo eShop stopped selling games in March 2023, so game cards are the way to build a library now.

Open the system and look at both screens and the hinge, then try the Circle Pad, the C-Stick and every button. The system charges with the same Nintendo AC adapter used by the DSi and every 3DS model. Chargers, styluses, microSD cards and cover plates vary by unit and are included only if the title lists them. The battery and the microSD slot both sit under the back cover, which takes a small screwdriver to remove.

This is a North American New 3DS. Nintendo 3DS games are region locked, so plan on North American 3DS game cards. Nintendo DS games are generally not region locked and play fine. Game Boy Advance cartridges will not fit, since the system has no GBA slot.
