Bigger screens for the 3DS library

Nintendo released the 3DS XL in North America in August 2012, about a year and a half after the original 3DS. The top screen measures 4.88 inches and still shows stereoscopic 3D without glasses, adjusted with the 3D depth slider beside it. The bottom touch screen grew as well, which makes games like Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon easier on the eyes. The Circle Pad, Home button and SD card slot work the same as on the smaller model, and the larger body is easier to hold for long sessions.

3DS, DS and what the XL does not play

Every standard 3DS game card runs on the 3DS XL, from Super Mario 3D Land and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds to Kid Icarus: Uprising. It also plays Nintendo DS game cards in 2D. The handful of games built for the later New 3DS hardware, such as Xenoblade Chronicles 3D and Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition, will not run on it, and there is no slot for Game Boy Advance cartridges. The system has outer cameras for 3D photos, StreetPass for swapping data with other 3DS owners nearby, and a stylus holder on the right side.

3DS games are region-locked, so a North American 3DS XL plays North American 3DS cards. Standard DS game cards are not region-locked and play regardless of where they were sold. Games made only for New 3DS hardware will not run on this model.
