CD games for the Genesis
Sega released the Sega CD in North America in 1992 as an add-on for the Genesis. The Genesis still handles the controls and video, while the Sega CD adds a CD drive, a second processor and extra sound and graphics hardware for scaling and rotation effects. Games like Sonic CD, with its time travel between past and future versions of each zone, Lunar: The Silver Star, Lunar: Eternal Blue, Snatcher and Popful Mail showed what the extra space could do. It also plays standard audio CDs and CD+G discs through its own menu.
How the Sega CD connects
The Sega CD plugs into the expansion port on the side of a Genesis Model 1 or Model 2. The first Sega CD model is a front-loading tray unit that sits under the Genesis, and the second is a top-loading unit that sits beside it. Either way, the Sega CD needs its own power supply, and the Genesis still needs its own AC adapter and video cable. The later Genesis 3 has no expansion port and cannot use a Sega CD. Cartridge games keep working in the Genesis slot while the add-on is attached.
What to know before buying a used Sega CD
The disc drive is the part to think about on any Sega CD, since the laser and the tray or lid mechanism see the most wear. Model 1 units use a motorized tray, and Model 2 units use a flip-up lid. Accessories vary by unit, and the power supply, spacer plate, cables and the Genesis console itself are included only if the listing title says so. Sega CD games are region-locked, so a US unit plays North American Sega CD discs.
