Forty-two games on board
Sega released the Genesis Mini in North America on September 19, 2019. The lineup covers much of what made the Genesis popular: Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic 2, Streets of Rage 2, Gunstar Heroes, Contra: Hard Corps, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Comix Zone and Earthworm Jim for action fans, plus Phantasy Star IV, Shining Force and Landstalker for RPG players. It also includes two extras that never came out on the original console, a version of Tetris and a new take on Darius. The list is fixed, and there is no cartridge slot.
Save slots and two-player favorites
Every game can be suspended into save slots, which takes the sting out of long runs through Ecco the Dolphin or Shinobi III. Switching the menu language changes the box art to match that region and, for many games, loads the Japanese or European release instead of the US one. Two USB controller ports sit on the front, so two players can share the split-screen races in Sonic 2 or the co-op in Streets of Rage 2. Contra: Hard Corps and Gunstar Heroes also support two players, which makes the Mini good for a couch session.
Getting a used Genesis Mini running
The console needs an HDMI cable to your TV and a USB power source. Controllers, cables and the power adapter vary by unit and are included only if the title lists them. Original Genesis controllers use a different plug and do not connect directly, so look for Genesis Mini pads or USB controllers made for it. Any suspend saves left on the system can be overwritten as you play, so you can start each game fresh.
