Two sticks and a rumble
Sony released the DualShock in North America in 1998, replacing the earlier digital pad and the short-lived Dual Analog controller. It kept the familiar D-pad and face buttons, added two analog sticks that click in as L3 and R3, and put a motor in each grip for vibration. Ape Escape was the first game that required it, using one stick to move Spike and the other to swing gadgets like the Stun Club and Time Net. The Analog button with its red light switches between analog and digital modes.
Using it on a PS1 or PS2
The DualShock plugs into both controller ports on every original PlayStation model, including the smaller PSone. It also works in a PlayStation 2 and handles many PS2 games, but it lacks the pressure-sensitive buttons of the DualShock 2, so PS2 games that rely on pressure sensitivity may not play properly with it. For PS1 libraries such as Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo 2 and Crash Bandicoot: Warped, it is the controller those games expect, with vibration wherever they call for it.
Inspecting a used PS1 DualShock
Older analog sticks can loosen and drift, so let each one rest in the center and watch for movement in a game. Press every button, including Start and Select, which see less use and can stick. Turn on analog mode and confirm the red light comes on. Check that both rumble motors kick in during a game with vibration, and run a hand along the cable for kinks near the plug and the controller body. Wear on the grips varies by unit.

Yes, it plugs into a PS2 and works with PS1 games and many PS2 games. Its buttons are not pressure sensitive, so PS2 games that rely on that feature may not play properly. For a PS2-first setup, the DualShock 2 is the better fit.
