Two screens, a stylus and a microphone
Nintendo released the DS in North America in November 2004 with a clamshell design, a touch screen on the bottom and a regular display on top. Games put all of it to work. Nintendogs had you call your puppy by name through the built-in microphone, Brain Age asked for handwritten answers, and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass let you draw notes directly on its maps. Mario Kart DS, New Super Mario Bros. and the Pokemon Diamond, Pearl and Platinum games all run on this first model, along with nearly every DS card released afterward.
The Game Boy Advance slot on the bottom edge
What sets this model and the DS Lite apart from later handhelds is Slot-2, the cartridge port on the bottom edge. It accepts Game Boy Advance games such as Metroid Fusion, Golden Sun, Advance Wars and Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. Some DS games also read a GBA cartridge in that slot for extras. Pokemon Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, for example, use it for Pal Park, which moves Pokemon over from the GBA games. Original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges are not supported in either slot.
Before you pick up a first-model DS
The original DS is the oldest model in the family, so the hinge, the shoulder buttons and the touch screen are the parts worth a close look on any used one. The top screen has no touch layer, which is how the system was designed. It charges through a port on the back and uses the same style of charger as the Game Boy Advance SP, not the later DSi and 3DS adapters. The stylus, charger and any game cards vary by unit and come only if the title lists them.

Can the original DS play 3DS or DSi games?
No. It plays standard Nintendo DS game cards and Game Boy Advance cartridges. Nintendo 3DS cards have a small tab that keeps them out of DS systems, and DSi-exclusive software needs a DSi or 3DS. DS game cards are not region-locked, so cards from other regions play too.
What comes with this DS?

Can it still go online?
Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection shut down in 2014, so online play through that service is no longer available. Local wireless still works, including DS Download Play and the built-in PictoChat, which let nearby DS owners play or chat without an internet connection.
