The other half of the Wii controller
Nintendo shipped a Nunchuk with the Wii when it launched in 2006. It plugs into the port on the bottom of a Wii Remote and adds an analog Control Stick for movement, plus C and Z buttons under your index finger. It also has its own motion sensor, so games can read how you swing or shake it separately from the remote. That split lets you move with one hand and aim or swing with the other, which is how Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Super Mario Galaxy and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess play.
Games that need a Nunchuk
Many Wii games require a Nunchuk rather than just supporting it. Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, Metroid Prime 3 and No More Heroes all expect one, and Wii Sports boxing puts a Nunchuk in one hand and the remote in the other. Wii Sports Resort uses it for archery and a few other events. Two-player boxing needs a Nunchuk for each player, which is why a spare comes in handy. It also works with Wii U games that support Wii Remote and Nunchuk play.
Giving a used Nunchuk a once-over
Push the Control Stick in every direction and make sure it returns to center, then press C and Z to check that they click cleanly. Look over the cable for cuts or kinks, especially near the plug. The Nunchuk draws power from the Wii Remote, so it has no batteries of its own. It works with the Wii Remote and Wii Remote Plus and passes through a Wii MotionPlus attached to the remote. Color varies by unit, and remotes are not included unless the title says so.

Does the Nunchuk work on its own?
No. It has no wireless connection or battery and must be plugged into a Wii Remote or Wii Remote Plus to work. The remote handles the connection to the console. It works with the Wii, Wii Mini and Wii U in games that support it, and it has no region lock.
Can I use it with a Wii MotionPlus attached?
Yes. The Wii MotionPlus has its own pass-through port, so the Nunchuk plugs into the back of the MotionPlus and both work together. Games like Wii Sports Resort archery and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword use exactly that setup.
