Pointing, motion and a speaker
The Wii Remote tracks where it is pointing with an infrared camera in its tip that reads the sensor bar, and it senses tilt and swings through a built-in accelerometer. That is what lets you bowl in Wii Sports, aim in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and steer in Mario Kart Wii. It also has a small speaker, rumble and four player lights along the bottom. Held sideways, it works like a classic pad for games such as New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Donkey Kong Country Returns.
Syncing it and adding attachments
The Wii Remote pairs with a Wii over Bluetooth using the red sync button under the battery cover and the sync button on the console. It runs on two AA batteries. The port on the bottom takes a Nunchuk, a Classic Controller or a Wii MotionPlus attachment. This standard remote does not have MotionPlus built in, so Wii Sports Resort and Skyward Sword need the clip-on MotionPlus or a Wii Remote Plus. It also pairs with a Wii U for Wii games and Wii U games that support it.

Pop off the battery cover and look at the springs for rust or leakage from old batteries. Press the sync button and watch for the four player lights to blink. On the Wii Menu, the pointer should move smoothly with no jumping. Try every button, especially A, B and the D-pad, and feel for rumble when you start a game. The wrist strap, silicone jacket and batteries vary by unit and come only if the listing title names them.

No. This is the standard Wii Remote without MotionPlus built in. It handles most Wii games, but titles that require MotionPlus, like Wii Sports Resort and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, need the MotionPlus attachment or a Wii Remote Plus.
Does this Wii Remote work on Wii U?
Yes. It is a Wii controller, and it also works with every Wii game played on a Wii U and with Wii U games that support Wii Remotes, such as New Super Mario Bros. U. The console needs its sensor bar connected for pointing.
