What the sensor bar actually does
Despite the name, the sensor bar does not sense anything. It holds infrared lights at each end, and the camera in the tip of the Wii Remote watches those two points to work out where you are aiming. That is how you click through the Wii Menu, aim a crossbow in Link's Crossbow Training or point at Star Bits in Super Mario Galaxy. The bar sends no data to the console, and the wired cable only powers the lights.
Placing it on a Wii setup
The official sensor bar has a thin cable that plugs into the sensor bar port on the back of a Wii. It can sit on top of the TV or on the stand below it, and you tell the Wii which spot you chose in the Wii Settings so the pointer lines up. The same menu has a sensitivity setting if the pointer feels jumpy or slow. A Wii U uses the same bar and the same kind of port, so it also works there.
Checking a used sensor bar
Look along the cable for kinks, cuts or a bent plug, since the cord is the part most likely to fail. The plastic front should be free of cracks. To confirm the lights are working, point a phone camera at the bar while the console is on, since many phone cameras, often the front one, show the infrared glow as faint dots. Stands and adhesive pads come only if the listing title says so.
