The PlayStation, redesigned smaller
Sony released the PS one in North America in 2000, the same year the PlayStation 2 arrived. It is a rounded, compact version of the original PlayStation with the same library. The disc lid opens from the top, the two controller ports and two memory card slots sit on the front, and power comes from an external AC adapter instead of the internal supply of the older model. Sony also dropped the parallel and serial ports from the back. Picture and sound come through the AV Multi Out port, the same connector used by the PS2 and PS3.
Games and controllers that work
The PS one plays North American PlayStation discs, covering the full library from Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Spyro the Dragon and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. It also plays audio CDs. Original PlayStation controllers, DualShock controllers and PS1 memory cards all work with it. It cannot play PlayStation 2 discs. Sony also sold an optional 5-inch LCD screen that attaches to the PS one, which is a separate accessory from the console.
