A hero who cannot jump

Captain Toad carries a heavy backpack, so he walks, climbs ladders and plucks turnips but never jumps. Each course is a compact stage you spin around with the camera, looking for hidden paths, switches and the three Super Gems tucked into corners. Every course also has a bonus challenge, such as finishing without taking damage or finding a hidden gold mushroom. The story follows Captain Toad and Toadette as they chase Wingo, a giant bird who swipes their Power Star, across three episodes.

Built around the GamePad

The Wii U GamePad does real work here. You tap the touchscreen to slide blocks and move platforms, blow into the microphone to raise certain lifts, and tilt the GamePad to aim turnips in the mine cart stages, which switch to a first-person view. Boss fights include the fire-breathing dragon Draggadon, and finishing the game opens bonus stages based on Super Mario 3D World. It is a single-player game that also works well with a helper sitting nearby to spot secrets.
