Anti-gravity and 32 tracks

Nintendo released Mario Kart 8 for Wii U in 2014. The headline feature is anti-gravity, where blue panels turn your wheels sideways and let you drive up walls and upside down, and bumping other racers in those sections gives you a speed boost. The 32 tracks mix new courses like Mount Wario, Twisted Mansion, Electrodrome and Sweet Sweet Canyon with returning favorites such as Toad's Turnpike and Rainbow Road from the N64. The Koopalings join the roster for the first time.

Items, split screen and Mario Kart TV

New items include the Boomerang Flower, the Piranha Plant that snaps at racers and coins, the Crazy Eight and the Super Horn, which can knock away a Spiny Shell. Up to four players race on one TV in split screen, and one person can play on the GamePad screen alone. After a race, Mario Kart TV lets you watch and edit highlight reels. Online races on Wii U ended in 2024 when Nintendo shut down the service, so local play is how this disc is enjoyed today.

No. Nintendo ended online play for Wii U games in April 2024, so Mario Kart 8 on Wii U is now a local game. Up to four players can still race together on one TV in split screen.
