A connected world and the Super Acorn

Nintendo launched New Super Mario Bros. U alongside the Wii U in 2012. Bowser and the Koopalings take over Peach's Castle and fling Mario, Luigi and two Toads far away across one large connected map. The route home runs through Acorn Plains, Layer-Cake Desert, Sparkling Waters, Frosted Glacier, Soda Jungle, Rock-Candy Mines and Meringue Clouds. The new Super Acorn turns Mario into Flying Squirrel Mario, who glides, clings to walls and gets an extra lift in midair.

Five players and Boost Mode

Up to four players can run through stages together on Wii Remotes held sideways, while a fifth player uses the GamePad in Boost Mode, tapping the touch screen to place blocks and stun enemies. Baby Yoshis ride along in certain stages, one puffing up like a balloon, one blowing bubbles and one lighting up dark areas. Nabbit shows up on the map to steal items, and Challenge Mode, Boost Rush and Coin Battle add replay once the story is done.
