The smallest Wii Nintendo made

Nintendo released the Wii Mini in Canada in late 2012 and in the United States in November 2013. It is a pared-down redesign of the Wii with a matte black shell, red trim and a top-loading disc drive with a lid you open by hand. To reach a lower price, Nintendo removed the internet features, the SD card slot, GameCube compatibility and component video. What is left does one job, running Wii game discs with Wii Remotes, and it suits a spare room or a kid's bedroom.

Wii games that play on it

Standard North American Wii game discs run on the Wii Mini, including Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, Mario Kart Wii, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Donkey Kong Country Returns and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Games save to the console's internal memory. Online modes are not available on this model, so plan on offline play. Motion controls work the same as on the original Wii, with a sensor bar placed above or below your TV.

Setting up a pre-owned Wii Mini

The Wii Mini needs its power adapter, a composite AV cable, a sensor bar and at least one Wii Remote, and those vary by unit and are included only if the title lists them. It outputs composite video only, so plan on a TV with yellow, red and white inputs or a converter. The sensor bar plugs into a port on the back of the console. Standard Wii Remotes, Wii Remote Plus controllers and Nunchuks all work with it.

Can the Wii Mini play GameCube games or go online?

No. Nintendo removed GameCube support, internet features and the SD card slot from this model. It runs standard Wii discs offline, and Wii discs are region locked, so stick with North American copies. For GameCube discs you need an original Wii with GameCube ports or a GameCube.
