Two screens, one console
The Wii U was built around the GamePad, a controller with its own 6.2-inch touchscreen. Games use it as a map, an inventory or a second view, and many let you move the game off the TV entirely and keep playing on the GamePad while someone else watches television. That idea shaped games like Nintendo Land, ZombiU and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, where you tap blocks and turn the camera by hand. Mario Kart 8, Splatoon and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U all started here, and games such as Star Fox Zero and Nintendo Land never came to later hardware.
Wii discs and accessories carry over
Backward compatibility is a big part of the appeal. The Wii U runs Wii game discs through its built-in Wii mode, and it works with the Wii Remotes, Nunchuks, Classic Controllers, Balance Board and sensor bar you may already own. That means Super Mario Galaxy, Wii Sports Resort or Donkey Kong Country Returns can share a shelf with Wii U games. It does not read GameCube discs and has no GameCube controller ports. Video goes out over HDMI at up to 1080p, so the console plugs straight into a current TV.
What to look at on a used Wii U
Start with the disc slot, which should accept and eject discs without grinding. Check that the HDMI port and the power input sit straight and firm, and that the vents are free of heavy dust. The console needs a Wii U GamePad for first-time setup, so plan on having one. Nintendo closed the Wii U eShop to new purchases in 2023, which makes disc games the main way to build a library now. Can I still play online?
Nintendo ended online play for Wii U in April 2024, so online matches in games like Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon no longer work. Local multiplayer, single-player campaigns and Wii games all still run offline.
