A second screen for the Wii U
Nintendo launched the GamePad with the Wii U in North America in November 2012. It has a 6.2-inch touch screen, two analog sticks, a full set of face and shoulder buttons, a front camera, a microphone, motion sensors and an NFC reader for amiibo. Games use the screen in different ways. Super Mario 3D World can show the full game on the pad with Off-TV Play, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD keeps the map and items there, and Nintendo Land builds whole attractions around one player seeing things the others cannot.
Pairing a GamePad with your Wii U
The GamePad connects only to a Wii U console over its own wireless link, and it cannot play games by itself or work with any other system. A replacement pad has to be paired before use. With the Wii U and TV on, you press the SYNC button on the console, then press the SYNC button on the back of the GamePad with the stylus tip and enter the short symbol code shown on the TV. The GamePad works best in the same room as the console, since its wireless range suits a normal living room.
What to look for in a used GamePad
The parts of a GamePad that wear with use are the analog sticks, the shoulder buttons, the charging port and the battery, which is a replaceable pack behind the back cover. The screen also shows marks more easily than a regular controller.
