From Outset Island to the Great Sea
Link's story starts on Outset Island on the day he comes of age, when a giant bird carries off his sister Aryll and he chases after her with the pirate Tetra and her crew. That leads to the Forsaken Fortress, a talking boat called the King of Red Lions and a Great Sea dotted with islands. Dragon Roost Island, Forest Haven and the Tower of the Gods hold early challenges, and a flooded Hyrule waits beneath the waves. The Wind Waker baton lets Link change the wind, summon cyclones and control others with songs.
What the HD version changes
Nintendo released The Wind Waker HD in 2013 with new lighting and a widescreen HD picture on top of the original art style. Some changes speed things up. The Swift Sail, bought at the Auction House on Windfall Island, makes the boat much faster and keeps the wind at your back. The late-game Triforce hunt needs fewer charts, and Hero Mode, where enemies hit twice as hard and hearts do not drop, is available from the start. The GamePad shows your items and map, so swapping gear no longer stops the action.
Choosing a used Wind Waker HD disc
This disc needs a Wii U console and plays with the Wii U GamePad or a Wii U Pro Controller, and it supports off-TV play on the GamePad screen. Look for deep scratches on the disc's playing side before starting a long voyage. Save data stays on the Wii U, so you begin a new adventure on Outset Island. The case and manual are included only if the title says so.

It plays like the GameCube original, with dungeons, puzzles, sword combat and a large ocean you cross by boat. The GamePad handles the map and inventory, so you can set items with a tap, and you can move the whole game onto the GamePad screen.
Will this disc play on a Wii, Switch or GameCube?
No. It is a Wii U disc and needs a Wii U console. The Wii and GameCube cannot run Wii U games, and the Switch has no disc drive. Wii U consoles are region locked, so this North American copy is for a North American system.
Is it different enough from the GameCube version?
The story and dungeons are the same, but the HD version adds the Swift Sail, a shorter Triforce chart hunt, Hero Mode from the start and GamePad inventory. If you played the GameCube release, the faster sailing alone makes a replay feel smoother.
